To understand the differences between barcode scanners and QR code scanners. We need to understand the differences between 1-D and 2-D codes.

1-D vs 2-D code scanners

There are generally 2 main types of Scanner types. Barcode Scanners, also known as 1D Scanners, scan Linear Barcodes. These barcodes can be identified by its horizontally binary codes in equal vertical proportions. These barcode types are commonly used in UPC and MPC barcodes.

On the other hand, QR code scanners, also known as 2D scanners, scan 2D codes. Consumers commonly address 2D scanners as QR Code scanners due to their widespread representation. QR codes are a more common variation of 2D codes.

1D code scanners have a single horizontal ray of decoding beam while 2D scanners, as its name suggests, normally uses more than 1 ray of decoding beam. Newer models of 2D scanners combine image scanning technology to assist in 2D reading instead of having multiple layers of intertwined laser beams to scan.

Places of Usage

As QR codes start gaining popularity in usage, 2D scanners are also rising in its demand due to its scanning needs. Industries using such scanners include Warehousing and logistics, Software Development, Security and more.

Barcode Scanners remain common in the retail industry due to their continued widespread usage in UPC and MPC Barcodes.

On Summary

The main difference between QR codes and Barcode Scanners is its price. 2-D scanners that scan QR codes cost more than 1-D scanners. This is because 2-D scanners have backward compatibility capabilities that allow them to scan 1-d linear codes. Of course, there are other factors that can determine the best barcode scanners to buy. However, it truly depends on the consumer's scanning needs that define the type of scanners that are the best fit for its purpose.
